Reviewing Codes…
NAEYC Code~ I-1.12—To work with families to provide a safe and smooth transition as children and families move from one program to the next.
~Significance~ To me this is important because most of the times the families and children enter our classroom it is a first for them. A first for the children entrusting a complete stranger to help them, guide them and mold them. This for them is one of the first relationships with adults in which they may have to respect. For the families I have had, it is scary for them to leave their little ones with someone else. For 4 years they have been the care taker and it’s hard to let someone else do it now. As for the transition part, we want the children to love school; we want them to want to learn. So building that trust with them so they can move onto kindergarten is important. They want to feel heard , loved, and respected.
NAEYC Code~ P-1.7—We shall strive to build individual relationships with each child; make individualized adaptations in teaching strategies, learning environments, and curricula; and consult with the family so that each child benefits from the program. If after such efforts have been exhausted, the current placement does not meet a child’s needs, or the child is seriously jeopardizing the ability of other children to benefit from the program, we shall collaborate with the child’s family and appropriate specialists to determine the additional services needed and/or the placement option(s) most likely to ensure the child’s success. (Aspects of this principle may not apply in programs that have a lawful mandate to provide services to a particular population of children.)
~Significance~ Striving to build relationships with families and children is what I do everyday. Learning the personality of each child and working with them to meet their needs in the classroom it different for each child and family. Being the bridge to connect home and school can be difficult at times but in the end benefits the child the best. In my experience there have been teachers that struggled doing that. The children not only struggled at home but they also struggled in the classroom and on the playground. Maintaining an open relationship with the families connects two very important pieces for children.
DEC Enhancement of Children’s and Families’ Quality of Lives~ 4. We shall advocate for equal access to high quality services and supports for all children and families to enhance their quality of lives.
~Significance~ Having access to high quality services to support children and families for their quality of life. Families have so many different kinds of backgrounds. But everyone deserves quality. Being an educator in the early childhood field, I see children that have come from different backgrounds and care facilities. Lots of children do not see the inside of a school until they are in preschool and giving them the opportunity to experience a quality school setting is important. One of the most important jobs as an early childhood educator is individualizing each child’s school experience. Because not all children learn the same, the same goes for their parents, and families. Having the ability to advocate and teach to different learning styles benefits so many. We are early childhood educators, changing lives, one family at a time.
